With this easy hummus recipe, you’ll never buy hummus again
Hummus is a delicious and healthy dip based on canned chickpeas. Most grocery stores sell ready made versions in a variety of flavors but we find them not only too expensive but also not as tasty as our homemade version.
Luckily it only takes 5 minutes to make, and you can even freeze it for later. The secret to keeping it fresh, whether it’s in your fridge or freezer, is to add a layer of olive oil on top so it retains its moisture.
A simple recipe that you can customise to your liking
The tangy and creamy flavors come from tahini (sesame paste), olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and spices. This recipe is the classic version that uses ground cumin, but you can add other spices, or even vegetables, into the mix to customise it to your liking. Altogether is makes for a healthy snack or appetizer that is packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats.
Serve your homemade hummus with pita bread, fresh vegetables, or use it as a dip for our oven baked falafel. If you want to make this into a whole meal, simply wrap falafel, hummus and some fresh veggies into a tortilla and you’re all set.

Easy 5-minute Hummus
Ingredients
- 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed (400 g net weight)
- 1 garlic clove
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2-3 tbsp tahini
- ½ tsp salt (add more to taste)
- lemon juice of half a lemon
- ½ tsp cumin
- 5-6 tbsp (about 60 ml) water (add gradually until you get desired texture)
Garnish (optional)
- 1 pinch paprika powder
- 2-3 tbsp olive oil
- a couple chickpeas
Instructions
- Drain canned chickpeas. If you want your smoothies to be extra smooth and have a little more time, you can peel the chickpeas by squishing them in a bowl of water. We usually don't do this.
- Add all ingredients to your blender or food processor and blend until creamy. Add little sips of water to get to the desired texture.
- Garnish with chickpeas, olive oil and paprika powder.
Storage
- Store in a container and cover the surface with oil. Refrigerate for a couple of days, or freeze for later.
